Moving targets
Article Abstract:
The House Builders Federation is likely to propose that houses be assessed for energy efficiency with an overall score. The present system prescribes U-values, measuring thermal conductivity for individual components. The builders claim that designers are being limited to a few methods of construction in order to meet increasingly stringent U-value standards. They believe an overall measure of energy used in heating and water systems would allow more flexibility and be more easily understood by house buyers. Many builders already use such calculations as marketing material.

The package has been sold to a further 4 companies since Nov 1992.

The age of resin
Article Abstract:
Fibre-reinforced composites are increasingly finding uses in the construction industry and could have applications as flexible and affordable structural materials. Composites are materials that combine aramids and synthetic fibres; they are strong, light and durable. The main problem associated with construction use has been the establishment of a manufacturing process. Maunsell Structural Plastics has developed a process based on a modular system using cellular panels.
