Article Abstract:
Dennis Cope, chairman of UK house builder Fairview New Homes, speaks about the company philosophy. Fairview is currently in the portfolio of Hillsdown Holdings but, since it was founded in 1961, it has always been under the leadership of Cope. Staff also stay with the company and directors can receive large performance payments. High overheads necessitate volume sales. Fairview builds 2,000 homes a year and concentrates on land acquisition and sales promotional activities. Prices of smaller homes can be low and are negotiable. Current company activities include large regeneration schemes.

PFI hospitals: overview and cost model
Article Abstract:
The private finance initiative (PFI) has frustrated the construction industry and its clients, due to delays and high bidding costs, in the health sector particularly. Risk management strategies are aimed at encouraging effective managment of risk, but many risks involved are difficult to price. Payment is based on the unitary scheme including elements for availability, use and quality, and the role of advisers to a PFI client is vital. A cost model of a day care unit is given, including, design, tendering and risk management aspects.

Political failures make Hereford patients suffer: after bridging one affordability gap, Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust's plans for a much-need new building were hit by the double whammy of further funding problems and John Major's early election call
Article Abstract:
Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust's plans for a new building are in limbo following John Major's announcement of a six week election campaign. This meant that the Treasury could not approve Herford's business case application. The trust now faces an affordability gap and there is debate as to whether the NHS should provide extra cash. It is uncertain if Labour is elected whether it will approve advanced PFI hospital deals, or reappraise such projects.
