New Australia privacy code to go into effect in September
Article Abstract:
A new privacy code has been created by the Australian government that prohibits transfer of data to US list companies without adequate protection. Titled "National Principles for the Fair Handling of Personal Information," the guidelines state that organizations can only send personal information overseas if it will be properly protected in Australia. This means that firms must keep data secure, be open about handling personal data, give people access and include an "opt out" provision to reduce further DM communications. The Federal Privacy Commission drafted the new code in spring of 1998. The guidelines will be incorporated into the Australian DMA's code by September 1998.
