Article Abstract:

UK urban landscaping lags behind Europe and the US due to the lack of government finance and cooperation. Commercial landscapers lead the field, such as Charles Funke's work at Broadgate, City of London. Local councils encourage commercial developers to provide landscaping by offering planning permission and land. UK firms still obtain international contracts, such as Sir Norman Foster's project for Nimes in the South of France. The mayoral system in France and Spain encourages urban landscaping. Barcelona, Spain is one of the best examples of urban landscaping in Europe.

Cement set-back

Article Abstract:

Funding of the BCA (British Cement Association) has been cut following the financial difficulties of its 3 financiers Blue Circle, Castle Cement and Rugby Cement. The BCA received 4 million pounds sterling a year to provide training, research and the promotion of the industry. 1.3 million pounds sterling was spent on research and development programmes. BCA's staff has been cut to 15 and discussions on its new image are taking place which include ideas such as levies or broader membership. Critics claim that BCA's research was too specialised.
