On the right track
Article Abstract:
Some firms working in the UK construction industry have introduced bar code technology for tracing the movement of supplies in factories and on building sites. Bovis has introduced bar code technology along with some of the sub-contractors working on a project to build a new supermarket for Safeway PLC. Some industry observers point out the scheme will only be successful if all the firms, working within the construction industry, agree on one system. The managers running the Safeway building project are hopeful changing how the supply chain is organised will reduce costs by some 30%.

Keeping tags on it
Article Abstract:
Bovis Continuous Improvement Manager Laurence Marsh has introduced an electronic tagging scheme for building components. The system known as iTag allows a record of equipment or components in a building to be stored electronically. The record keeps details of the age, type and maintenance record of the equipment. Bovis hope to introduce the scheme into a very large hospital contract they hope to agree. The new contract includes a 30 year maintenance agreement. The cost of using iTag on the new building will be around 30,000 pounds sterling.

Together in electric dreams
Article Abstract:
The UK government has launched the UK's IT Best Practice program for the construction industry. The new initiative is aimed at improving links between contractors and subcontractors, reducing errors, and saving time and money. The industry has generally welcomed the program but the Federation of Master Builders fears that the project will not reach the small companies that constitute a vast proportion of the construction sector and whose training needs may not be addressed.
