Penalty time for Laing

Article Abstract:

The 121 million pounds sterling Millennium Stadium project in Cardiff, Wales, has presented significant difficulties for Laing. Indeed, the company has lost 20 million pounds sterling on the design-and-build scheme. Those considering why this project went so badly wrong will focus their attention on why the company made such severe miscalculations when assessing the risks on its guaranteed maximum price contract with client Millennium Stadium Plc. Laing agreed to a price of 99 million pounds sterling in Mar 1997, when designs were still at a very early stage.

Laing shake-up to rein in 'local barons.' (management structure for Laing's new construction operation)

Article Abstract:

A central management team with extensive supervisory powers will be the focus of the management structure for Laing's new construction operation. The company hopes in this way to ensure that local concentrations of power do not emerge, as was the case with the Millennium Stadium project in Cardiff, Wales, on which losses of 20 million pounds sterling were made. There will also be strict management control in terms of overall cost and risk management to the parent company.

Laing uses direct labour on 114m pounds sterling job

Article Abstract:

Laing is looking to boost the quality of work on the 114 million pounds sterling redevelopment of Cardiff Arms Park rugby stadium, and will therefore begin using mostly directly employed labour soon. This comes at the same time as the UK government takes steps to clamp down on people miscategorising themselves as self-employed. Laing is also planning to set up training schemes in an effort to improve the quality of its work.
