The UK government's pledge at the end of Oct 1992 to pursue a policy of economic growth has triggered off a move towards takeovers and mergers within the construction industry. Favourite takeover candidates have seen their shares increase. This could leave the industry with 50% less major contractors. Medium-sized contractors are threatened the most, whereas small firms remain in demand. The majority of bidders will be foreign. The recession has left stronger firms with a wide choice of takeovers. Discount on assets and low market capitalisation make companies target bids.

Buyers are offered up to 4,000 pounds sterling to spend on goods instead of having fixtures and fittings included in the overall price. Vouchers may be forfeited for a reduction in the house price of up to 2,000 pounds sterling.

Who's winning the work
Article Abstract:
A league table of construction contractors shows which are winning the most new work. The table is compiled by Advanced Building Information from planning applications and press releases and will be published monthly with a cumulative listing. Fairclough heads the table for the period from Jan to Mar 1992 but admits its success has been at the expense of other firms and that the value of contracts is falling.
