Article Abstract:
There are still many unscrupulous firms operating in the UK construction industry, according to Tony Merricks, general manager of Balfour Beatty's specialist contracting business. He has also been selected to head the UK government's taskforce to take action against such firms. He states that he has always regarded the accreditation of competent operatives as the most significant issue. His taskforce is considering changes to the Building Regulations Act and the Fair Trading Act, but he will not hesitate to recommend tougher legislation if necessary.

Making it big
Article Abstract:
UK construction concern Mansell Chief Executive David Beardsmore believes that he has a talent for developing and expanding profitable businesses. When he joined the company in 1994, he shifted it away from larger new-build contract and design-and-build work. He also restructured the finance department. He is now keen to focus on small contracts from the company's network of regional bases. He is also preparing for a flotation, probably in 1999.
