Risky business

Article Abstract:

A rise in the number of overseas construction and engineering postings has lead to an increase in the risks taken by contractors when choosing to work in dangerous and unstable parts of the world. UK construction firms are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of their overseas workers, after a series of high-profile abductions and murders in countries, such as Colombia and Yemen. The Foreign Office provide information on how to protect contractors from kidnap attempts and offers advice on how to handle difficult situations.

RIBA pushes US-style public procurement

Article Abstract:

Compulsory competitive tendering for public buildings should be replaced with a quality-based, US-style system of procurement, according to the RIBA. A new selection procedure should be developed which takes account of projects in which a consultant has already been involved and in which shortlisted applicants are ranked according to a number of criteria. In this way, there will be less emphasis on cost, which inevitably reduces quality.
