Malls menace every urban centre in UK
Article Abstract:
The growth of out-of-town shopping developments combined with declining consumer spending figures is threatening the traditional high street shopping areas of most towns in Britain. The situation of Stockton-on-Tees illustrates the problem. The town suffered a devastating economic slump in the mid 1970s and investment in the urban centre stopped. New investment in the 1980s went into the out-of-town Teeside Park development. The urban centre is now the subject of a City Challenge regeneration bid.

County changes to cut planning staff
Article Abstract:
Local government structure in England is to be reviewed during the 1990s. The government expects the review to result in more unitary authorities with the abolition of some county councils and power devloving to districts. However, the House Builders Federation warns that strategic planning should continue to be controlled on a regional basis. Development control planning should also be reviewed in the light of the Audit Commission's recommendations that service and quality be improved.
