Rush hour
Article Abstract:
A survey looking into careers in the construction industry found 25% of building professionals looking for work had been in their current job for two-four years whilst another 25% had been with their employer for 12 months or less. For some 71% of respondents the level of salary in their new job was very important. Whereas 62% would stay with their employer if they were promoted and offered extra money. Some 70% of the participants were looking for new employment or were already working for a new employer. The survey included some 164 people who answered a questionnaire during Jun 1999.

Losing out
Article Abstract:
British quantity surveyors (QSs) were found to have average fees worth between 2%-3.3% of the cost of the construction project, in a study undertaken by Mirza and Nacey Research. Postgraduate surveyors have fees of only 20 pounds sterling per hour. Some QSs firms point out the fees show no sign of improvement. There is concern the low fees will have negative impact on recruitment into the profession. Some blame the profession for not promoting itself. Some 250 QSs practices took part in the study by answering a questionnaire based on work undertaken in the nine months to Jul 1999.
