Sale of auto-inflatable PFDs at least a year away
Article Abstract:
The commercial availability of Coast Guard-endorsed automatic inflatable life jackets is a year or so away from happening. The reason for the waiting period is because the National Boating Safety Advisory Council (BSAC), the one responsible for making recommendations to the Coast Guard, wants the life jackets to be equipped with indicators showing that the carbon dioxide cylinder is completely charged and suitably attached. The recommendation made by the BSAC is sent before an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) panel, which will make a decision on whether to alter the UL standard based on factors such as safety, technical feasibility and cost.
