Article Abstract:
Judge John Newey QC is the most senior of the seven judges who sit in the Official Referees' Court. The majority of the Court's work is related to the construction industry and its workload has increased three times between 1973 and 1990. Newey has introduced more efficient systems and encourages rapid settling of claims but cases can still take up to 18 months to be heard. Judge Newey qualified as a barrister in 1949, became a Crown Court recorder in 1972 and was appointed to the Official Referees' Court in 1980. The Court is a branch of the High Court and was established in 1876.

Humber, super sniper
Article Abstract:
Roger Humber is director of the House Builders Frederation. He has worked for the Federation since 1975 and been director since 1979. Humber believes the government must revive the housing market in order to end the recession and is organising his members and other industries to protest at the lack of action. He sees high interest rates and planning laws as damaging to the house building industry. A former researcher for Conservative politicians, Humber is known for his effective lobbying and outspokenness.
