Service Merchandise refocuses on jewelry, housewares

Brentwood, TN-based Service Merchandise has decided to scrap sales of toys, electronics and sporting goods and focus on its core businesses of jewelry and housewares. It is redesigning its sales stores slightly more than one year after seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy organization in 1999. The retailer aims to have completed the remodeling of 160 of its 221 stores by mid-2001. It has not yet decided whether the remaining stores will be remodeled.

USPS trucks promote Kmart in Puerto Rico

US Postal Service (USPS) trucks began promoting Kmart Corp's credit card offer in May 2001 in the metropolitan area of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the surrounding area. About 350 trucks bearing an ad with a toll-free number are roaming the streets to market a Kmart MasterCard. The promotion is slated to continue for 45 days. Terms of the agreement between USPS and Kmart were not disclosed.
