Terms of endearment: soon after it opened in 1991, the Woodlea primary school designed by Hampshire County Council's famous architecture department won a hat trick of awards
Article Abstract:
The Woodlea primary school in Bordon, mid-Hampshire won three supreme awards in 1991 from the RIBA, the BBC and Education journal. The building was designed to suit the area, which includes woodland and an Iron Age fort. It was designed for children, with low brick screens, low sill heights and an informal layout. It is clad predominantly in timber stained in a variety of earth-coloured pigments. It is said to be easy to clean and maintain, although one criticism is that the open plan design leads to noise interference between classrooms.
