Building's fifth annual league consultants' tables, show that the UK recession has affected all top firms. The survey includes engineers for the first time. Building Design Partnership is top of the multi-disciplinary consultancies and has cut 300 jobs. Mott MacDonald is the top of the consulting engineering table with 400 more qualified engineers than Ove Arup, who has cut 32% of their staff. Davis Langdon and Everest is number one on the quantity surveyors' table. Public sector building surveyors' contracts have increased mainly because of the Property Services Agency's loss of monopoly.

Overall UK construction projects decreased by 5.8% in 1992, is expected to decrease by 2% in 1993 and increase by 1.4% in 1994. Residential sales in 1993 are expected to remain the same as 1992; at 120,000. House sales decreased during the 4th Qtr of 1992 due to the reintroduction of stamp duty. Non-residential building will decrease substantially during 1993 and 1994. Commercial sector output is expected to decrease by 10% during 1993 and 1994. Industrial building projects will increase slightly.

However, the sector has since declined, dropping 722 million pounds sterling in 1999.
