Quality is becoming more and more important in the homebuilding industry, with builders demanding more of suppliers, who can now deliver more. The 'Professional Builder and Remodeler' consumer survey for 1993 reveals that consumers are prepared to pay more for quality amenities with 62% of consumers willing to pay between $1-2,000 more for zoned heating. Smart customers do not take quality claims seriously, with 77.1% making an inspection for themselves, 67.5% requiring a warranty, and 52. 8% comparing with other houses. The importance of quality of engineering, teamwork and customer needs in the building industry is also discussed.

PB&R's 26th annual report

Article Abstract:

The top 400 housing firms' total revenue has fallen, according to 1993's Annual Report of Housing's Giants. Revenue fell to $42.81 billion in FY1992, vs $41.62 billion in FY1991. The 400 giants accounted for 29.7% of all shelter in 1993, vs 31.6% in 1992. Centex had the highest total revenue in 1993, followed by Ryland Group, Kaufman and Broad, PHM, and NVR. Other statistical data, and information on the top 25 giants are also presented.
