NAHB backs Clinton plan, but economist panel sees pain with no gain
Article Abstract:
The National Assn of Home Builders of the United States (NAHB) board stated its support of Pres Bill Clinton's economic plan which aims to reduce the deficit, remove the credit crunch, generate employment and promote long-term investment. However, economists who met to discuss the 1993 housing and economic outlook criticized the plan, saying that it will hamper economic recovery. They contend that the tax hikes and budget cuts will burden business and industry and negate the public sector's productivity progress. The NAHB and the economists predict an increase in housing starts in 1993.

NAHB official advises contingency plan for using alternative materials
Article Abstract:
National Assn of Home Builders Research Foundation senior industrial engineer Lee Fisher urges builders to seek alternative construction materials in the wake of the price crisis in the lumber industry. Potential substitutes include concrete masonry and other concrete products, engineered wood products, lightweight steel and structural plastic-foam panels. Plastic lumber provides another alternative material but its present prices are not cost-competitive with wood-framing.

1993 product outlook
Article Abstract:
Consumers have learned to become more discriminating in their choice of products. The economic recession has made people more careful in their spending habits and made them prioritize products with affordable quality. An increase in environmental consciousness has also influenced product preferences especially if they enable consumers to save money. Builders should find creative ways to discern consumer needs to remain competitive in the market.
