The learning zone: deconstructing the Act
Article Abstract:
The UK Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 is aimed at regulating payments and resolving disputes in construction contracts. For contracts longer than 45 days a contractor has the right to be paid in stages. Payments can be stopped as long as notice is served and it clearly explains why the payment has been withheld. Completion payments are due within 30 days. Contract disputes may be referred to an adjudicator. There is some concern the Act will result in more contracts being referred for adjudication. The Act applies to construction professionals and contractors.

Know your copyrights
Article Abstract:
Some building industry bodies have set out standard terms of engagement relating to copyright, such as RIBA whose terms provide that an architect keeps copyright in the work produced. The Association of Consulting Engineers provides that the consulting engineer retains copyright in its work and that the client is given licence to use the work only for constructing, letting and maintaining the project.
