Timber's back in the frame
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom National House Building Council has suggested the use of timber-frames in new houses in England and Wales will rise. They are popular with builders because they are easier to build an many housing developers are looking at using timber-frames in their new housing developments. Mortgage lenders are willing to lend money on modern timber-frame houses. A television programme in 1983 has suggested timber-frame houses would not last, which caused the demand for the houses to decline rapidly. Some 40% of houses built in Scotland have timber-frames.

The UK construction industry has been accused of encouraging discriminatory practices against black or Asian people, resulting in up to 70% less minority employees working in the industry compared to other industries in the UK during 1999. Ethnic construction employees reported constant harassment and discrimination in the work place. Some firms are taking positive steps to tackle the issue of racism in the industry, although many fail to regard the issue as important.
