Top firms team up to win prime contracts

Kvaerner and project management concern Symonds have created a consortium to bid for prime contracting, the procurement approach being developed by the UK Ministry of Defence. This approach requires single-point responsibility for the construction and costs of a building for as long as 30 years. Consortia to bid for prime contracting have also been formed by Balfour Beatty Construction, engineering firm White Young Green and Balfour Beatty project management division Heery and by Citex, which is likely to link with companies including Thomas Vale and Pearce Construction.

US-owned cladding firm Harmon is seeking damages of up to 15 million pounds sterling from the House of Commons corporate officer, claiming that the UK government secretly planned to award a contract on the 250 million pounds sterling new MPs' building to a domestic cladding concern. Harmon alleges that the cladding contract, which was awarded to Swiss/UK joint venture Seele Alvis, contravenes national procurement law and European Union guidelines.
