Tube electricians vote for strike ballot: dispute over inequitable rates of pay escalates as men decide enough is enough.
Article Abstract:
Electricians working on the Jubilee Line extension to the London Underground network have voted for a postal strike ballot because of inequitable pay rates. The men, who are members of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union, work for contractor Drake and Scull on London Underground Ltd.'s project and are seeking a pay rise from the client. The strike will be called after Christmas 1996 if no rise is forthcoming, Drake & Skull is unable to fund the increase as it is working to a fixed-price contract. Other electricians working for contractor Pirelli are paid higher wages.
