Henderson: no rate increase until 2001
Article Abstract:
Postmaster General William J. Herderson told participants at the Direct Marketing Assn's Government Affairs Conference that there would be no postal rate increase until 2001. Henderson said the United States Postal Service (USPS) remains committed to the rate freeze even as revenue shortfalls are forcing the USPS to seek between $800 million and $1 billion in 2000. He added that the agency needs to be more creative in generating more revenues, such as offering seasonal discounts at different times of the year.

Waxman set to introduce substitute to McHugh's H.R.22
Article Abstract:
Reps Henry Waxman and Chaka Pattah will introduce a postal reform bill to substitute for the HR 22 or the Postal Modernization Act of 1999 being pushed by Rep John McHugh. Unlike the HR22, Waxman's bill does not support a provision that allows the US Postal Service to divide its products and services into noncompetitive and competitive categories overseen by the private law corporation. The bill proposes to create an independent, nonpolitical commission to decide on these issues.
