United Germany: how to make your marks
Article Abstract:
The market for construction materials and services in the unified Germany offers good opportunities for British exporters, as the domestic industry is showing signs of not being able to cope with demand and some materials and trades are in short supply. Housing, which at present represents around 50% of the industry in volume terms, is likely to see the most rapid developments, especially as there is a housing shortage and the domestic industry may not be able to keep up with demand. Investors are being offered large tax and grant incentives by the state and regional governments, and the main areas of concern will be modernisation of housing, then urban planning and new building projects.

Counter revolution
Article Abstract:
The UK post office network has plans to change its interior design. The aim is to create a customer-friendly, efficient environment, with ergonomic consideration for the staff. The designers, Post Office Counters have a budget of 50 million pounds sterling. The first new-look post office is at Edgware Road, London. Normal, low-cash transactions are now served at free-standing desks, which have mobile tills and small VDUs, which record every transaction. Cash-based transactions are carried out behind secure, plated glass counters. Desks are ergonomically designed with emphasis on drawer position and VDUs.

About 20% of the projects were design and build. The report cost 400,000 pounds sterling to compile. Only a third of the products specified by architects are used by the contractors.
