Victorian values
Article Abstract:
The standard building contract in use in the UK in 1900 had some similar elements to modern legal documents concerning the construction industry, but was also substantially different, in that the length and obscurity of modern building contracts was not evident. It was written in clear English and it was only seven pages long. One element, with similarities to section 112 of the Construction Act, states that a contractor could stop work until interim payments, and interest due on them, were met, and that the architect had to grant a time extension which was reasonable with the stoppage time.

Progressing the PFI in local government
Article Abstract:
The UK government is keen to extend private finance schemes in the local authority sector and has relaxed regulations and set up a new unit to enable this process. The private finance initiative (PFI) benefits local authorities by enabling them to achieve greater value for money and therefore undertake more projects, and because the risk is transferred to the private sector. The series of measures undertaken by the government during 1995 and 1996 to encourage local authorities to make full use of opportunities offered by PFI are described.
