Vital signs
Article Abstract:
Analysts have predicted a UK house recovery since the beginning of 1993 which will last until 1996. House prices have followed the patterns of gross domestic product since the 70s. House prices fell by 15% in 1975 and by 7% in 1981. The statistical pattern shows that prices are increasing for 1993. The Apr 1993 Building/Gallup Poll reveals that housebuilders intend to build 140,000 new homes in 1993 and 165,000 in 1994. Pessimists claim that the high public sector borrowing requirement, unemployment and inflation resulting in personal tax increases will undercut the housing recovery.

Wind in their sales
Article Abstract:
UK building contractors completed overseas contracts were worth 2.1 billion pounds sterling in 1991; the best figure since 1986. The UK recession and departure from the ERM (European Exchange-Rate Mechanism) has made UK firms more competitive. Best export opportunites are seen as Germany and Hong Kong. Third World contracts have decreased from 70% in 1982 to 41% in 1991. The 33 billion pounds sterling PADS project (Hong Kong Ports and Airport Development Strategy) will bring a lot of work for UK firms once approved as will the redevelopment of Berlin.
