Vroom for improvement
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry will be grateful to Sir John Egan for his report on the construction industry if it opens up new possibilities for profit-making. However, the fact that it is the clients of the industry who are the driving force behind the report makes it less welcome. Egan may have been instrumental in making the car industry more profitable but experts from one industry cannot understand the tribulations of another. Success in some industries is largely due to clients standardizing their requirements, but almost all building projects are prototypes.

Dressing down
Article Abstract:
The construction industry's workforce is not well-known for its sartorial elegance, particularly in summer, but it will be difficult to persuade workers to wear anything different. The well-known low-slung trousers and no-shirt look has come to epitomize building-site style, but construction workers are individualists and are unlikely to be persuaded to wear a uniform similar to those worn by airline and supermarket staff.
