Waiting for the post
Article Abstract:
The number of jobs in the construction industry has fallen by a third over the last 12 months, according to the Jobwatch survey by 'Building', and many unemployed people in the industry are now considering moving into other sectors or even emigrating. Surveyors and architects seeking a new job have very poor prospects, with very few permanent vacancies becoming available. In the contracting sector, the trend is uneven, with some jobs attracting many applicants and others none at all. The rise in the number of posts abroad is also considered.

The axemen cometh
Article Abstract:
The Government is to reduce public spending by 16 billion pounds sterling in the three years to Jul 1995. The cuts are expected to affect capital projects and the building industry is likely to suffer. Housing, road building and hospital construction plans amounting to 20 billion pounds are particularly vulnerable. The Building Material Producers' forecasting panel has revised its prediction of growth downwards.

Brickmakers face cuts and mergers
Article Abstract:
Consolidation in the brick industry in the UK could lead to more than 80% of production coming under the control of only four or five concerns. Many manufacturers are looking to reduce overcapacity, and some are expected to announce temporary lay-offs. It is already believed that Blockleys will accept a friendly merger, while Blue Circle has put its Ockley Brick division up for sale.
