West side stories
Article Abstract:
Strong emphasis is being placed on sustainable urban renewal in Bristol, England. The city council has become much more positive about development, and is cooperating with the private sector. Redevelopment is focusing on the city's former docks area, where schemes include Wildscreen World, Science World and a performing arts centre. The second major development site is the 250 million pounds sterling, 10 ha Temple Quay site adjacent to Temple Meads Station. Local contractors are benefiting from a steady flow of tender invitations.

How to exploit the skills gap
Article Abstract:
There is often a lack of management and commercial expertise among construction consultants such as engineers and architects in China. This means that there are considerable opportunities for western construction consultants to gain profitable work in China. It is necessary to cope with a great deal of bureaucracy, but this is vital if a western consultant's advice is to be taken seriously. The main way forward for western consultants in China will be to become involved in locally and government-invested construction schemes.
