House developers should consult public representatives before applying for permission to build new houses, in order to help avoid protests from local groups. Local councillors often understand the community and have an insight to local opinions. Informal discussions can assist housebuilders understand the thoughts of the public and help find ways of avoiding confrontation. Some environmentalists suggest housebuilding on greenfield land is unsupportable, particularly as the houses are often too expensive to serve local needs.

The UK government is advocating mixed-use development in its urban regeneration strategy. Whilst schemes are being developed by smaller commercial and social development organizations there is generaly an aversion to them on the part of big companies and investors are wary of mixed-use developments. Some mixed-use specialists offer advice and the plans of Berkeley Lordland Consortium, which includes Berkeley Homes and Crosby Homes, are reported.
