Zodiac buys its biggest competitor

Zodiac of North America, the Stevensville, MD-based division of inflatable-boats maker Zodiac AG, has purchased its largest competitor in inflatable boats market, Avon Marine of South Wales, UK. Under the agreement, Avon Marine will continue conducting business under its present name, and will maintain an independent sales force. Both companies are at the top of inflatable-boat market, but each firm is at the forefront of contrasting aspects of inflatable boats technology. Avon specializes on conventional Hypalon/Neoprene technology, while Zodiac focuses on thermoplastics and thermobonding or welded fabric.

Company transports yachts for charter

Sunsail Sailing Vacations ships charter yachts between the company's Caribbean and Mediterranean bases through Sunsail's 2-year-old program, dubbed Sunlines. Sunlines enables the company, which is among the biggest sailboat chartering firms across the globe, to charter yachts for 20 or more weeks in the Mediterranean and another 12 or more weeks in the Caribbean. Currently, Sunsail charters a huge cargo boat two times annually to transport between 60 yachts and 80 yachts with sizes that range from 32 feet to 55 feet from the Caribbean to Europe and vice versa.

Discover Sailing gets 3,000 to give it a try

The National Sailing Industry Association (NSIA)'s Discover Sailing program has convinced over 3,000 people in six months to try sailing. NSIA's Kacey Meagher points to Discover sailing's participation at Whitbread festivities in Baltimore, MD and Fort Lauderdale, TX, as the reason behind the increase. A 30-second public service announcement being broadcasted over the show "Ultimate Sailing" on ESPN is attracting the attention of prospective sailors. Discover Sailing provides free introductory half-hour sails to give people firsthand experience on sailing.
