Clusters of master control genes regulate the development of higher organisms
Article Abstract:
Research on fruit flies has revealed two sets of master genes that control the development of body segments in embryos. In flies, BX-C is a gene cluster that controls the development of the thorax and abdomen and ANT-C is a cluster that controls the development of legs and antennae. These gene clusters control the activation or suppression of other genes. In beetles, mice and humans, BX-C and ANT-C occur together in a complex called HOM-C, and in mice and humans there are four HOM-C regions on four different chromosomes. The fact that BX-C and ANT-C have been linked for at least 500 million years indicates that they are fundamentally important in the development of animals. Animal studies have shown that a defect in these genes can cause abnormalities similar to some human congenital disorders. Certain cancers could also arise from defects in these genes.
