The origin of reflections beneath the Blue Ridge-Piedmont Allochthon: a viewthrough the Grandfather Mountain window
Article Abstract:
A number of crustal models are presented for the geologic region beneath the Blue-Ridge-Piedmont Allochthon. To evaluate the various models, compressional wave velocities and densities are measured on 30 rock samples. Moreover, seismic reflection surveys are used to provide important information on subsurface geophysical conditions. However, seismic reflection interpretation in frontier regions remains speculative.

Origin of the Betic-Rif mountain belt
Article Abstract:
Important geological and geophysical observations that need to be accounted for by any model for the evolution of the western end of the Mediterranean Sa are summarized. It is argued that the most significant observations are consistent with a short, steep east dipping subduction zone during the early Miocene until the exhaustion of subductable oceanic lithosphere in the area of Gibraltar.
