W.E. Knowles Middleton: 1902-1998

William Edgar Knowles Middleton was a leading researcher and writer on meteorological instruments and optics as well as on meteorology and general science. He specialized in meteorological instruments when he joined the Meteorological Service and started work on optics research with the National Research Council of Canada. He was an honorary member of the American Meteorological Society. Middleton died on Jan 30, 1998 in Alberta, Canada.

Glenn Wilson Brier: 1913-1998
Article Abstract:
Glenn Brier was a prominent figure in statistical meteorology. His contributions included pioneering research on weather-forecast verification, probability forecasts and statistical decisionmaking, long-term predictions, and statistical theory of turbulence. One of his most notable achievements was a 1950 paper which introduced the Brier score for assessing probability forecasts. He died on Jan 2, 1998 in Lake Ridge, VA.
