Operational use of weather satellites
Article Abstract:
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) believes that weather satellites are essential instruments for climate monitoring and weather predictions. The AMS urges authorities to maintain and even enhance the existing satellite system. The AMS suggests a number of steps to improve the operations of meteorological satellites. Some of these include focusing on the calibration of satellite measurements, permitting accessibility to all satellite data and stressing education and training in the optimal use of satellite remote sensing data.

NASA satellite sheds new light on La Nina phenomenon
Article Abstract:
Scientists are employing sea surface temperature measurements obtained by the Microwave Imager instrument on board the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite to enhance their knowledge on the La Nina phenomenon. Data obtained through the satellite are superior to those gathered by the infrared radiometer which is affected by clouds and atmospheric aerosols. Preliminary investigations appear to agree with present ideas on how La Nina conditions are generated.
