Relationships between plankton community structure and plankton size distribution in lakes of northern Germany
Article Abstract:
Eutrophic conditions in Arendsee Lake, rather than benthic or littoral factors, are responsible for differences in the biomass of various size classes of plankton. The impact of daphnids on the plankton size distribution (PSD) was also investigated for 28 lakes in northern Germany in addition to Arendsee Lake. The evidence suggests that changes to a nonhomogenous PSD can occur as a result of feeding by large filter-feeders, which creates a higher transfer efficiency from small to larger individuals.

Calibration of an optical plankton counter for use in fresh water
Article Abstract:
An optical plankton counter (OPC-IT) designed for use with marine zooplankton has been calibrated for fresh water use. Biomass, numerical concentrations and size distributions can be accurately measured for lake zooplankton. Beam length and calibration algorithms must be adjusted to cope with the higher concentrations of zooplankton in lakes. The counter can handle concentrations of up to 100 organisms liter-1.

Can mussels control the plankton in rivers? - a planktological approach applying a Lagrangian sampling strategy
Article Abstract:
Predation by an indigenous population of unionid mussels appears to be responsible for declines in plankton population densities downstream of a shallow lake in the river Spree in Germany . Observed downstream changes include lower planktonic biomass, lower total phosphorus concentrations, increased soluble reactive phosphorus concentration, and increased transparency of the water.
