TRMM set for October launch
Article Abstract:
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) will be launched on a Japanese H-II rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on Oct 31, 1997. It is the first earth science satellite specifically tasked to investigate tropical and subtropical rainfall. The TRMM is a joint venture project between NASA and Japan's National Space Development Agency. The satellite is equipped with a microwave and visible/infrared sensors and a spaceborne rain radar. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center will operate the TRMM through NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System.

NASA's earth science program adjusts to loss of data from Japanese ADEOS satellite
Article Abstract:
NASA has developed another scatterometer called the SeaWinds that will be installed on Japan's Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) II, scheduled for launch in 1999. NASA also plans to launch another Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) on a Russian Meteor-3M spacecraft in the year 2000. These NASA programs are intended to replace the first scatterometer and TOMS that were aboard the first ADEOS, which was declared lost by Japan's National Space Development Agency on Jun 30, 1997.

Third satellite in GOES series launched in April
Article Abstract:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA have launched the third in a series of five US weather satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Station, FL. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)-K, built by Space Systems/Loral, will be called GOES-10 once it achieves orbit. The satellite will be parked in orbit at 105 degrees W and activated if a replacement for GOES-8 or GOES-9 is required.
