Election '92: the HR debate
Article Abstract:
The winner of the 1992 presidential elections would have a huge credibility gap to contend with. A fax poll completed in Aug 92 showed that neither George Bush nor Bill Clinton were believed to be addresing pressing issues effectively in their campaign platforms. Major issues cited by respondents concern work and family, the cost of health care, the development of the inner city, the skills gap, the budget deficit and excessive government regulations. Suggested means of dealing with these problems center on a cooperative venture between industry and government through such means as student skills testing, government support for companies offering job training and multisectoral job partnerships. This follows a trend set by the business industry of achieving self-dependency regarding the economic problems currently besetting the country.

Scandal of the City
Article Abstract:
The banks, insurance companies, investment houses and other financial services operations active in the City of London generally offer a poor deal to people who hold a personal pension, a unit trust, an endowment or a personal equity plan. Consumes with typical employers' pension schemes tend to benefit, with these schemes having expanded 13.9% a year since 1988. However, personal pension holders obtain a less consistent investment performance and face higher charges. There are also problems with the performance of unit trust personal equity plan fund managers. It is important when purchasing a financial product to undertake careful research.
