Airline Logic
Article Abstract:
The comparison between airline and banking deregulation is drawn. An excerpt from a speech by Dick Ferris, chairman of United Airlines, defines 'regulated thinking' and 'market thinking.' The Chairman of Citicorp cites two critical factors in his bank's successful adaptation to deregulation. Bank of America and First Chicago encourage middle management involvement in strategy decisions. Rewards are given for achievement and innovative thinking. Investment banking subsidiaries are separate from the larger institution's bureaucracy.

Mister Right
Article Abstract:
Reesons why banks will increase business with middle-sized companies, rather than concentrate on large corporate business, are given. Disadvantages of working with the 'middle market' are cited. Middle-market businesses are often loyal to local banks. Banks are eager to serve the 'ordinary' multi-millionaire, although only a few may find it as profitable as anticipated. The Swiss banks have traditionally served this clientele. Examples of competition are given.
