Article Abstract:
The UK book market was estimated to total around 3.2 billion pounds sterling in 1996, up 24% in real terms from 1992. Some 72% of the market is accounted for by consumer titles, with the remainder split between professional and academic titles, audio books and school titles. The demise of the Net Book Agreement appear to have had little effect on sales through major independents, although they have marginally lost market share. The book market in 1997 is forecast to reach 3.35 billion pounds sterling, rising to 4.11 billion pounds sterling by 2001.

Article Abstract:
The UK book market was worth an estimated 3.03 billion pounds sterling in 1998. Sales are forecast to rise to 3.21 billion pounds sterling in 1999. Those who purchase many books tend also to be the most extensive users of libraries, but there may be an element of substitution between the two. It is likely that the proportion of book purchasers in the population will rise as a result of programmes designed to boost the profile of books in the community.
