By Oil Alone? A Survey of Norway
Article Abstract:
Oil is saving Norway's prosperity. Possible directions further oil and gas development may take are reviewed. It is to be hoped that nationalism does not give operational control of new field development to Statoil, as the expense of the expertise of major international oil companies. Since the oil is such an important factor in the economy, politics plays a part in decision making. Norway's non-oil economy is in a mess. Specific problems contained in a recent OECD survey are listed. Political leadership is considered. Conservative power lessened in the fall 1983 elections. The economic policy of conservative leader Kaare Willoch is detailed. Graphs and tables are included.
