Hong Kong Fears a Sellout

Article Abstract:

The government of China appears committed to regaining sovereignty over Hong Kong when the British relinquish their administrative role in 1997. The Chinese have stated that Hong Kong will remain a capitalist province for at least fifty years after 1997. The British decision to make the Chinese government determine its Hong Kong policy so far in advance may have proven unwise. The people of Hong Kong are depending on the support of the British Parliament. The Chinese probably would not favor the return of Hong Kong before 1997. The economic situation in Hong Kong is being influenced by its uncertain future. The British should allow the formation of a local democracy in Hong Kong, which would prepare it for self-rule.
