Surviving audits: understanding the basics
Article Abstract:
Audits need not be viewed with fear and apprehension because they represent a valuable source of information that can help ensure the continued viability of organizations. Housing managers need to familiarize themselves with some basic auditing concepts. A financial audit consists of a number of processes conducted by independent CPAs that scrutinize the nonprofit organization's financial transactions and internal controls. The audit reports typically required of non-profit agencies are a Balance Sheet, A Statement of Revenues and Expenditures, and A Statement of Changes in Fund Balance. Another term that housing managers need to know is the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) which are issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board. Apart from the GAAP, non-profit agencies also need to comply with standards from the Government Accounting Standards Board and the General Accounting Office.
