Cutting the Chechen knot
Article Abstract:
The apparent death of Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev on 21 Apr 1996 will not bring a swift end to the breakaway republic's conflict with Russia, though it offers the potential for new negotiations. Divisions between interim President Zemlimkhan Yandarbiyev and Chief of Staff Aslan Maskhadov are unlikely to create an opening for the Russians, and the region's centuries-long struggle against Russian oppression reveals enormous persistence. Chechen history and present strains are discussed.
