Hidden wilderness
Article Abstract:
The oil spills of 1990 in the channel separating Staten Island, New York, from Elizabeth, New Jersey, killed a large number of birds such as herons and egrets. The oil soaked into the marshes of Staten Island may remain there for a hundred years. In 1989, 50 per cent of the young egrets succeeded to fledge, but in 1990 this percentage was 17. Six years after the 1990 spills, however, the herons of New York Harbor have recovered.
