All Turkish rectors face sack

Article Abstract:

Rectors at Turkey's state universities are facing the sack as a result of sweeping legislation that will be introduced to parliament in July 2003. The planned reforms will bring to an end the autonomy of higher education, effectively bringing it under governmental control. The main aim of the reforms is to restrict the power of Yok, the higher education authority which, under its centralised authority, has strictly administered universities. Yok has been at the forefront of banning Turkey's religious students from wearing headscarves on university premises, a move that has angered the country's Islamic-based government.
