Care in a country under siege: in a country that cannot afford drug therapies for HIV-Aids, a #500-a-year hospice scheme is helping South African families prepare for death
Article Abstract:
One of every nine South Africans has HIV or is dying of Aids, and Aids-related deaths in South Africa will reach 700,000 by 2005. HIV-Aids care is shifting focus to palliative care, home-based care that relieves stress on overcrowded hospitals and helps families understand the disease. People who receive home-based care are more willing to diclose their HIV or Aids status, a disclosure that is integral to any efforts at disease prevention.
