Fighting fit, target shy

Article Abstract:

Further education colleges were surveyed to find on how well prepared they were for independence from local authority control. More than three-quarters of college principals felt they were prepared for the change. Many of the respondents were doubtful that they could expand admissions to meet the government targets. Lack of resources was felt by many to be a barrier to successful independent operation.

In tune with the music world

Article Abstract:

The Birmingham Conservatoire aims to give its music students practical experience during their studies. They have formed a link with the City of Birmingham String Orchestra and the Royal Ballet to allow students to have practice in orchestral conducting. The Conservatoire hopes to greatly increase student intake by 1995.

An attraction of opposites

Article Abstract:

The University of Leicester and De Montfort University are in the same city, but until the year 2000 they had little contact with each other. The universities have both appointed vice-chancellors and are seeking to change their images and collaboration seems the key.
