How deep is your learning

Article Abstract:

Noel Entwhistle, education professor from Edinburgh University, Scotland, argues that the way that coursework is assessed and taught affects whether students are involved in deep or superficial learning. Students feel they have to take a superficial approach if they have little time for reflection prior to exams. They initially like a course to be compartmentalised since they finish each part once it has been studied. Later in the course they complain that they lack an overall grasp of their subject. There is a risk of overfragmentation from splitting up courses.

The centre's projects include research on environmental and genetic causes of cancer, and work on drug resistance. This involves links with drug design strategies, and finding optimal ways of using drugs.
