Lessons learned from detracked mathematics departments

Article Abstract:

The efforts of Phoenix Park and East High School to detrack their secondary mathematics curriculum are discussed. Both schools adopted a complex and connected view of subject, implemented a curriculum focused on important mathematical ideas, found a balance between coordination and professional discretion for teaching decisions and made clear distinctions between doing math and doing school in their teaching and in their evaluation of student learning.

Detracked ninth-grade English: Apprenticeship for the work and world of high school and beyond

Article Abstract:

Detracked ninth-grade English classes are the perfect environment for demonstrating that students with diverse skill levels and from racially and socioeconomically diverse communities can learn with and from each other. Teachers must provide a focused, rigorous and supportive curriculum for acknowledging and building on the skills of high and middle achievers.

How a detracked mathematics approach promoted respect, responsibility, and high achievement

Article Abstract:

High and equitable mathematics achievement of the mathematics department of an urban and ethnically diverse school is discussed. Teachers encouraged multidimensional classrooms, valued the perspectives of different students and also encouraged the students to be responsible for each other.
